The Boomer Delusion—It’s Not 1920, Darling! đź«– Alice Spills the Tea: Short Story

Alice twirled her spoon, tapping it against her teacup with a smirk. “Oh, my dears, it seems we must once again address a most peculiar phenomenon—some people (cough Boomers cough) clinging to a fantasy version of ‘the good old days’ that never really existed. Oh yes, they’ll tell you about how ‘back in their day,*’ everything was affordable, jobs were abundant, and the American Dream was just waiting for anyone willing to work hard. Cute story. Too bad reality doesn’t agree.

She leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “You see, the world has moved on, evolved, and oh, how they hate that. They talk about ‘kids these days’ as if younger generations are just lazy, whiny, and entitled—meanwhile, they got houses for the price of a sandwich, paid for college with couch cushion change, and somehow believe avocado toast is the reason millennials and Gen Z can’t afford to live.” Alice rolled her eyes. Paleeeze!

“And let’s talk about technology. Some of them still think cash is king, QR codes are the devil’s work, and anything beyond a landline is ‘too complicated.’ Yet, they demand respect while refusing to respect progress. Darling, just because you choose not to learn doesn’t mean the world should cater to your outdated ways. Adapt or get left behind—that’s how time works!”

Alice sighed dramatically, taking a sip of tea. “And don’t even get me started on the ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps’ myth. Sweetheart, you got help - whether it was dirt-cheap education, government programs, or a booming economy handed to you. You didn’t build that ladder alone, so don’t act shocked when the younger generations call out that the rungs are missing now.

She set down her teacup with a final, deliberate clink. “So, dearest Boomers (not all, but you know who you are), if you truly want respect, perhaps it’s time to accept reality instead of demanding everyone else pretend we’re still in a world that no longer exists. The future is here, and clinging to the past like a moth to a gaslight won’t change that.”

Alice smirked, lacing her fingers together. “Now, my loves, shall we move forward, or should we keep playing make-believe?”
